History of Chalet Tissières

Chalet Tissières or “La ferme des Tissières” as it was known was originally constructed in 1552 and is one of the oldest buildings in the Chamonix Valley. It was built as a farm “ferme” to provide produce for the beautiful village of Les Bossons, which is situated between Chamonix town centre and Les Houches. The name Tissières is a reference to the workers whom used to lodge and work on the farm and came from the lower reaches of the Valley to harvest and loom hemp plantations during the summer months. Tissières when translated means “loomers or weavers” to make cloth and material from fibres.

Camille Couttet - the original owner of La Ferme des Tissières. At this time, the farm had 4 acres of land and there were no other buildings between the farm and the wonderful ‘chapellle des Montquarts’ (picture taken in 1693), which still guards the entrance to our road.

La Ferme des Tissières before Renovations:

Today the chalets appearance is still very similar and the traditional feel of this beautiful piece of Savoyard architecture has been maintained to its current standing today. Its 2 foot thick stone walls still stand, giving the chalet its beautiful presence at the foot of the glaciers.

The wonderful water colour shows the farm in situe with the Bossons glacier tumbling from the North face of Mt Blanc.
